Deer Fencing

Electric fencing is ideal for containing or deterring Deer:

  • safer than conventional fencing
  • more effective than conventional fencing
  • costs less than conventional fencing
  • they will respect the fence quickly
  • simple also to electrify an existing fence

Electric fencing is a cost effective and great way to contain or keep out deer. Containing deer can be a difficult task, they are naturally wild animals and are very motivated to reach their food sources. Their high level of jumping ability means all fence must be a minimum of a certain height for the species. Deer are not used to human contact, can spook easily and are prone to predator attacks. This means they must be fenced properly for their own and human safety.

Deer Fencing needs to provide both a physical and psychological barrier to be effective. red-deer-fence-cr.jpg

The system that achieves both of these thing is a high tensile electric fence. This is the best choice as it is strong, secure, can be tall, durable in tough weather conditions and also will keep predators out if needed.

Electrified high tensile electric fences are long lasting and can last up to 25 years. They are simply the best solution to Deer control. Consider using treated hardwood posts from sutainable sources for use with high tensile wire. High tensile wire has the ability to bend and flex and return into it original shape if run into, making it deal for deer.

Wire and post spacing is important when installing a deer fence. It will stop any possibility of the deer getting through the fence. The height of the fence depends on the breed of deer you are fencing. If you are looking to exclude predators more wires with closer spacing at the bottom is needed. Please ensure that the ends of the fence well strained and anchored. Please find below a diagram of the different vertical spacing of wire fencing:

The fence line recommended for use with deer is high tensile wire. You need at least five strands of wire provide good visibility and coverage. For muntjac deer a lower close spaced fence is needed, whilst for red deer a high 180cm fence with closer spacing in the middle is suitable. To prevent jumping an electrified top line above the deers head is recommended.

Electrifying an Existing Fence

You can easily adapt or convert an existing conventional fence into an electric fence. This is a cost effective method if you already have a permanent fence in place. You can use the wooden posts already installed and put in insulators on the posts with wire. There are also many types post top insulators for mounting on an existing fence.

Deer require a minimum of 3,000v-4,000v on the fence with an electric fence energiser that has 1.5 Joules in stored energy on higher and longer fences. For fences that are permanent or if a mains supply is available using a mains energiser is really the best option. A mains system works by plugging the energiser into the supply inside and running lead out cable to a 2m earth stake and to the fence to power it. Many systems are going to be very long so you would be best looking at the Rutland ESM range above the ESM902. For remote areas or places you cannot get a mains supply to, 12v energisers should be used. When using 12v energisers it is important that you check the fence regularly to make sure it is working. A good 12v energiser to use with deer would be the Hizont A50 or Rutland ESB325.

Fence Line Conductor

We would recommend only using high tensile wire for use with deer. When you are installing a permanent fence its better to use high tensile wire as this is longer lasting. There is different quality of conductors lines available. A quality of a line is dependent on the number of conductors, diameter of conductors, level of resitance and breaking strain. Stranded, galvanised and high tensile are all conductor so you are usually looking at the level of resitance and breaking strain for quality on these.

Deer Fencing Kits

We do not have any deer fencing kits listed as this are fairly individual to each user. As normally large lengths of fencing can be needed and it will be particular for the breed of deer. Systems will normally contain a mains energiser, earth stake, high tensile wire and ring insulators. If you need a system please contact us with the length of the fence needed and we can quote very low prices for large quantities.
